Talk:Senses
From Sense Think Act
For there is no conception in a mans mind, which hath not at first, totally, or by parts, been begotten upon the organs of Sense....
and
Understanding is nothing else than conception caused by speech.
This may have been true in the past, but in Mathematics for hundreds of years and physics of the twentieth century, there has been a growth of concepts that are beyond the senses. A black hole is one example. Much of quantum mechanics is beyond any human experience. Gordo 09:18, 18 January 2007 (UTC) _______
Of the top quote its does say 'by parts'. Quantum maths needed the paper and pencil and the specialisted discourse to develop... ?
But I take the point that mathematics provides us with concepts far removed from human bodily sensation - but we still take in these concepts through our senses. Szczels 20:34, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Professor Stephen Hawking works in very abstract fields of mathematics and physics, but does not use pencil, paper or computer directly. Yet he is one of the top researchers of his generation. Gordo 09:46, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Point taken I'm using able-bodeist egs but even Prof SH depends on his senses for his data input... and muscle action for his outputs Szczels 21:29, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- Where do his novel ideas come from? Gordo 08:57, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Cogitation?
and more generally... STA is meant to be about the human being stripped of technology. 'Starting from scratch' to learn what are the basic elements of biological ability that make us given to us as a birthright. The exercises were chosen to not use (much) technology for various reasons mainly to do with wide access but also to keep it basic. Technical extensions of the senses, mind and muscle allow us much greater abilities of course. As does collective action which is a possible weakness fo this approach. However I'd expect these things to be considered next up.
' Understanding is nothing else than conception caused by speech.' suggest understanding is a matter fo discourse. Maybe undertanding can be the result of internal cogitation as well. But you could only check you really did understand by explication and discourse... what do you reckon? Szczels 10:13, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hawking's illness was diagnosed just as he started work on his Ph.D., so his methods were traditional. Gordo 16:31, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Senses
Balance as a sense? This is the theory in "The Element" by Ken Robinson with Lou Aronica [1] Gordo 09:02, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Looks interesting have you read Ken Robinson stuff? Szczels 21:58, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
